Jan Eastgate

President, CCHR International

Jan EastgateJan Eastgate has, for three decades, investigated psychiatric abuses, achieving significant reforms in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States. She is described by politicians, lawyers, psychologists and civil rights workers as a “tireless campaigner” and “a person of enormous determination and courage” who has “performed remarkable work.” She has helped instigate 35 government inquiries into psychiatric hospitals and practices and reforms around the world.

In her native Australia, Ms. Eastgate spent 16 years investigating psychiatric abuses, contributing to the reform of 16 mental health laws and medical practitioner acts, and to the introduction of laws establishing independent medical and psychiatric complaints mechanisms. One of her greatest achievements was a Royal Commission (government inquiry) into deep sleep treatment, a lethal psychiatric practice involving a barbiturate drug cocktail and electroshock. The government banned this practice and compensated hundreds of patients.

Now based in Los Angeles, Ms. Eastgate has conducted international investigations into and inspections of psychiatric facilities in Denmark, Greece, Germany, South Africa and Russia. She has also testified before numerous government inquiries and chaired public hearings into psychiatric abuse. She is the co-author of CCHR’s highly acclaimed booklets, available on this website.
