CCHR Fact Sheet: Minorities Targeted for Special Education and Psychiatric Drug

Psychiatrists have used special education—originally developed to provide equal education opportunities to the physically disabled—to hook millions of children onto psychotropic (mind-altering) drugs at a cost of $28 billion a year. In 2002, the President’s Commission on Excellence in Special Education found that 40% of children being labeled with “learning disorders” simply hadn’t been taught to read.

African American and Hispanic students are also three times more likely than White students to be labeled as mentally retarded. Hispanics are also disproportionately placed in special education.
